Biography

Dr. Sterling has conducted research on the epidemiology and treatment of HIV and TB since 1991. He has conducted numerous observational studies of HIV and TB in single and multicenter cohorts. He performs TB/HIV studies in NA-ACCORD (North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design) and performs and oversees TB/HIV studies in CCASAnet (Caribbean, Central and South America network for HIV epidemiology) of IeDEA (IeDEA International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS). He has active TB research collaborations in Peru, Brazil, and South Africa, and is co-PI of RePORT-Brazil (Regional Prospective Observational Research for TB – Brazil), a partnership between NIH and Brazilian Ministry of Health that developed an observational TB cohort to perform translational and epidemiologic studies. He leads the Epi-Outcomes Group, which helps drive most database projects, especially with VCCC data.

More About Timothy R. Sterling, MD

I am an infectious disease physician-scientist with expertise in the epidemiology and treatment of HIV and TB. I am the director of the Epidemiology and Outcomes Unit of the Tennessee Center for AIDS Research. I established the Epi-Outcomes group in 2003 and have led it since its inception. I have been successful in mentoring young trainees and junior faculty for academic positions and NIH funding. Since 1998 I have mentored 67 investigators, including 13 who have obtained NIH K Career Development Awards, and 9 who have independent NIH R funding. My trainees have also benefited from two multi-center HIV cohort collaborations that I participate in: the North American ACCORD and the Caribbean Central America South America network (CCASAnet) (both in the International epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) network). I lead efforts for the Regional Prospective Observational Research for TB(RePORT)-Brazil, and I have additional TB research collaborations in Peru and South Africa, as well as through the IeDEA network. I am well-suited to continue to lead the Epi-Outcomes group, and to serve as the Associate Director of the Developmental Core, with a specific focus on mentoring.
