Biography

I am an infectious disease physician-scientist with expertise in TB epidemiology, treatment and prevention, and HIV epidemiology. I have conducted several large multi-center epidemiologic and translational studies, as well as clinical trials, of TB and HIV. Together with Dr. Bruno Andrade at Fiocruz, I lead efforts for Regional Prospective Observational Research for TB (RePORT)-Brazil. I am the co-PI of RePORT-South Africa with Drs. Mark Hatherill and Thomas Scriba at the University of Cape Town. I am also a co-PI of RePORT-International, which coordinates and harmonizes RePORT research in Brazil, South Africa, India, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Uganda. I am the director of the Epidemiology and Outcomes Unit of the Tennessee Center for AIDS Research; I established the Unit in 2003 and have led it since its inception. In addition, I participate in multi-center HIV cohort collaborations: 1) the North American ACCORD and 2) the Caribbean Central America South America network (CCASAnet), both in the International epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) network; also 3) the CFAR Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS). The TB-Sentinel Research Network (TB-SRN), in which I also participate, collects data that are harmonized between RePORT-Brazil and IeDEA. I have successfully mentored early-stage investigators for academic positions and NIH funding, facilitated by 2 cycles of K24 funding. Since 1998, with continuous NIH funding, I have mentored 77 investigators, including 36 pre-doctoral and 41 post-doctoral trainees; 39 women and 37 under-represented minorities; 61 at U.S. and 16 at international institutions. Of these, there have been two F31, six T32, and 14 K awardees, and 13 with subsequent independent NIH R funding. I am well-suited to continue to serve as the Associate Director of the Developmental Core, and Director of the Epidemiology and Outcomes Unit of the Tennessee Center for AIDS Research.

More About Timothy R. Sterling, MD

I am an infectious disease physician-scientist with expertise in the epidemiology and treatment of HIV and TB. I am the director of the Epidemiology and Outcomes Unit of the Tennessee Center for AIDS Research. I established the Epi-Outcomes group in 2003 and have led it since its inception. I have been successful in mentoring young trainees and junior faculty for academic positions and NIH funding. Since 1998 I have mentored 67 investigators, including 13 who have obtained NIH K Career Development Awards, and 9 who have independent NIH R funding. My trainees have also benefited from two multi-center HIV cohort collaborations that I participate in: the North American ACCORD and the Caribbean Central America South America network (CCASAnet) (both in the International epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) network). I lead efforts for the Regional Prospective Observational Research for TB(RePORT)-Brazil, and I have additional TB research collaborations in Peru and South Africa, as well as through the IeDEA network. I am well-suited to continue to lead the Epi-Outcomes group, and to serve as the Associate Director of the Developmental Core, with a specific focus on mentoring.
