Biography

Dr. Berthaud is Professor in Medicine, Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Founding Executive Director of Meharry Community Wellness Center, AIDS Center of Excellence, and Associate Director of the Clinical Discovery Core of Tennessee Center for AIDS Research. Dr. Berthaud serves as Principal Investigator and Project Director for the NIH-sponsored Meharry HIV Research and Training Facility, Program Director for the HRSA-funded National HIV Residency Pathway Consortium at Meharry Medical College, and Mentor for the NIH-funded Enhancing Virology Training of Underrepresented Minority Students through Summer Research program and the U01-Practice-Based Research Integrating Multidisciplinary Experiences in Dental Schools. In 2005, he played a key role in the creation of the Meharry Center for HIV/AIDS Health Disparities Research. In 2006, he developed and implemented the ongoing PEPFAR program at Hôpital de l’Université d’Etat d’Haiti (HUEH) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and in 2017, he spearheaded the growing Meharry PEPFAR program in Zambia. His research focuses on HIV health disparities, HIV care continuum, HIV-associated neurological disorders, and COVID-19. His research had showed the detrimental effects of homelessness on Ending-The-Epidemic of HIV and demonstrated that the alterations in plasma mtDNA content could serve as a biomarker for mitochondrial dysfunction, potentially heralding subsequent neuronal damage in persons with HIV who have achieved viral suppression.

More About Vladimir Berthaud, MD, MPH

The mission of Meharry Community Wellness Center is to promote HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and transdisciplinary collaboration. Our primary goal is to eliminate HIV health disparities in Middle Tennessee by expanding access to comprehensive HIV treatment along the care continuum. The Center has been a top-ranked AIDS Center of Excellence in Tennessee for the past ten years. My primary research interests focus on HIV/HCV co-infection, oral biomarkers, and health disparities. I had published the largest retrospective observational study of health outcomes in underserved minorities living with HIV and HCV. Our team of collaborators is studying the role of oral inflammatory biomarkers in monitoring HIV disease progression among patients with sustained viral suppression. We have shown that discrimination and chronic stress have a profound impact on treatment adherence and viral suppression among MSM and that Black MSM have significantly high cortisol level as measured by hair sampling and lower rate of viral suppression of 61% compared to all other categories. Our team of collaborators on the Disseminated Evidence-Informed Intervention project has established a national model for linkage and engagement of women of color. I serve on the TN-CFAR as the Co-Associate Director of the Clinical Science Core at Meharry Medical College.
