About the Tennessee CFAR Scientific Advisory Boards
Our External and Internal Scientific Advisory Boards provide high-level advice, critical feedback, and guidance to the leadership of the Tennessee CFAR.
External Scientific Advisory Board Members
Barney Graham, MD, PhD, Chair (MSM)
Dr. Graham has extensive experience and interest in HIV pathogenesis and vaccine development. He understands the institutional commitment and unique resources at VU and MMC that will form the basis of the CFAR.
Richard Chaisson, MD (Johns Hopkins)
Dr. Chaisson is Director of the CFAR at Johns Hopkins. He has extensive experience in managing large research organizations and projects that bring together international collaborators and provide opportunities for development of new investigators while studying important strategies for understanding and controlling TB and HIV.
Michael Mugavero, MD, MHSc (UAB)
Dr. Mugavero is expert in HIV medication adherence. His research focuses on all aspects of HIV health services utilization ranging from diagnosis and initial linkage to care to long-term clinical outcomes with particular emphasis on engagement in outpatient HIV treatment and health care disparities.
Elizabeth Brown, ScD (Fred Hutch)
Elizabeth Brown, ScD (Fred Hutch) is a biostatistician engaged in the design and analysis of infectious disease clinical trials, including COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, and HPV. She is also the Director of the Statistical and Data Sciences Unit for the Infectious Diseases Clinical Consortium. Dr. Brown leads statistical methods research with a focus on Bayesian survival on longitudinal models for infectious disease transmission and prevention.
Rev. Kenneth S. Robinson, M.D. (UW Mid-South)
Rev. Kenneth S. Robinson, M.D. (UW Mid-South) serves as the President and CEO of United Way of the Mid-South. His bi-professional synthesis of medicine and ministry has made him a strong leader in the areas of public policy, health and healthcare, and community development at the highest levels of local, state and national impact. He served in the Governor’s Cabinet as Tennessee’s Commissioner of Health (2003-2007), guiding significant contracting and grant-making authority within his department’s $548 million budget.
Justin (J.D.) Smith (Utah Health)
Justin (J.D.) Smith is Director of the Dissemination and Implementation Science Core of the Utah CTSI and implementation science advisor for the Ending the HIV Epidemic’s HIV Implementation Science Coordination Initiative. He focuses on developing novel methods for implementation research in the prevention and treatment of HIV and other chronic and infectious diseases.
