Biography
Dr. Liu is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and serves as the Director of the Flow Cytometry, Gene Editing, and BSL3 Lab Core at Meharry Medical College. He earned his Ph.D. from Jilin University in China and completed his postdoctoral training at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Liu’s research focuses on the human enzyme APOBEC3G, a host restriction factor that inhibits HIV-1 replication and transmission. HIV-1 circumvents APOBEC3G through a protein called viral infectivity factor (Vif), which neutralizes and degrades APOBEC3G. Dr. Liu’s lab aims to develop strategies to counteract HIV-1 Vif and restore the antiviral function of APOBEC3G. He serves as the Associate Director of Advanced Technologies Core and a Member of the Executive Committee of the Tennessee CFAR. Â
